The PRS NF 53 is Paul Reed Smith’s modern interpretation of a classic early-1950s electric guitar design — specifically inspired by one of his own vintage instruments from 1953, the year referenced in the model’s name. Rather than creating a strict vintage reproduction, PRS approached the NF 53 as a way to capture the spirit of early electric guitar tone while refining it with the company’s renowned craftsmanship and engineering. The result is a guitar that blends timeless simplicity with subtle modern improvements, delivering the feel of a vintage workhorse with the reliability and playability players expect from PRS.
At the heart of the NF 53 is a swamp ash body paired with a bolt-on maple neck, a combination long celebrated for its lively resonance and articulate response. This pairing produces a bright, punchy voice with plenty of snap and dynamic range — perfect for expressive rhythm work and clear, singing lead lines. The instrument’s tone is further shaped by PRS’s innovative Narrowfield DD (Deep Dish) pickups, which sit somewhere between a single-coil and a humbucker. They deliver focused lows, musical highs, and impressive output while maintaining clarity and definition, making the NF 53 especially versatile for styles ranging from classic rock and blues to country, funk, and modern alternative.
Beyond its tone, the NF 53 stands out for its balance of vintage inspiration and modern performance. The steel plate-style bridge with brass saddles, bone nut, and PRS Phase III tuners contribute to excellent sustain and tuning stability, while the comfortable Pattern 53 neck carve offers a familiar, substantial feel that encourages expressive playing. Finished in a striking Black Doghair, the guitar also showcases PRS’s eye for detail and aesthetics — and it’s available right now at Haggerty’s Music. For players seeking the raw character of early electric guitar designs combined with the refinement of modern PRS craftsmanship, the NF 53 offers a distinctive and inspiring instrument.
