Visually stunning and steeped in Martin’s storied history, this Custom Shop 000 showcases the rare and coveted beauty of quilted maple — one of the most striking tonewoods available. Cut from master-grade sets, the maple used here displays exceptional depth, with a three-dimensional, rippling grain pattern that shifts and dances in the light. Far more than just an aesthetic marvel, quilted maple imparts a focused, transparent voice with outstanding note separation, making it an ideal choice for fingerstyle playing, alternate tunings, and arrangements that demand clarity across complex chords.
Though maple is less commonly seen in Martin’s traditional lineup, it has a long legacy in the world of luthiery, prized for its crisp articulation and fast decay. Pairing it with a short-scale 000 body and scalloped spruce bracing yields a guitar with superb responsiveness — offering a delicate touch for nuanced dynamics, but enough projection and headroom for more assertive strumming or flatpicking. The 000’s intimate dimensions make this instrument highly playable whether on the couch or in the studio, while the GE Modified Low Oval neck profile and black ebony fingerboard contribute to an effortlessly smooth feel.
Adding to the historical gravitas of this instrument is Martin’s revered Alternate Torch inlay — a design that traces its lineage back to Martin guitar #9488, built in 1902. This ornate motif appeared on some of Martin’s earliest pearl-inlaid instruments and became synonymous with the elite Style 45 when it entered the catalog in 1904. The specific version used here, revived in 2004, came to be known as the “Alternate Torch,” and now graces the fingerboard, headplate, and bridge of this custom model with Paua shell elegance.
From its flawless fit and finish to its rare tonewood pairing and century-spanning design elements, this 000 Custom is an heirloom-level Martin through and through — one that honors the past while inspiring modern-day players to write their own chapter in sound. Available now at Haggerty’s Music, this custom beauty comes with a hardshell case for convenient transport and premium protection.
