For the guitarist who wants vintage analog modulation without being confined to the limitations of a vintage pedal, this used JHS Emperor V2 combines old-school bucket-brigade character with the control expected from a modern pedalboard. JHS introduced the original Emperor in 2014, drawing inspiration from the sought-after Arion SCH-1 chorus, and followed it with the updated V2 in 2018. At its heart is a 3207 bucket-brigade chipset that supplies the warm, dimensional character associated with classic 1980s analog modulation, but the Emperor V2 expands that foundation with selectable chorus and vibrato modes, three modulation waveforms, tap tempo, expression control, and stereo output.

The Emperor can move from a subtle chorus sheen and wide, shimmering cleans to deep pitch vibrato, dramatic modulation, and convincing rotary-style movement. Volume, EQ, Speed, and Depth controls provide direct access to its core sound, while the V2's active tilt EQ replaces the passive Tone circuit of the original Emperor for greater tonal flexibility and improved low-frequency retention. Sine, square, and triangle waveform options further change the feel of the modulation, while the dedicated tap-tempo footswitch and Tap/Expression connection allow its speed to be controlled rhythmically or manipulated in real time.

Its additional routing features make the Emperor V2 particularly useful in more elaborate rigs. A TRS splitter cable at the output provides true stereo operation, and an internal switch allows the pedal to operate with either true bypass or JHS's high-quality buffered bypass. That combination makes the Emperor equally comfortable adding classic chorus to clean pop and alternative tones, producing swirling textures for ambient and psychedelic music, or creating rotary-inspired movement for blues, rock, and organ-like guitar parts.
