Few guitars in Gibson’s history have achieved cult status quite like the RD. First introduced in 1977, the RD was a bold departure from tradition — blending futuristic lines inspired by the Explorer and Firebird with cutting-edge electronics and a longer 25.5" scale length. While its original run was short-lived, the model steadily gained a devoted following among forward-thinking players across rock, metal, alternative, and experimental genres. Now, for the first time, the RD Custom joins the Gibson Custom core lineup — and notably, it stands as the first 25.5" scale solidbody core model ever offered by Gibson Custom Shop.

The RD Custom retains its unmistakable silhouette, complete with the comfortable rear tummy cut and commanding offset curves, but elevates the formula with true Custom-level appointments. A mahogany body with multi-ply binding, gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and striking gold hardware give it a commanding stage presence in Ebony. Mother-of-pearl block inlays and the iconic Custom split diamond headstock inlay reinforce its upscale pedigree. This is the RD reimagined not as a quirky outlier, but as a fully realized flagship instrument.

Tonally, the longer 25.5" scale length delivers a tighter low end, snappier attack, and increased clarity — making it an outstanding choice for drop tunings, modern rock, metal, and any style that benefits from articulation and string tension. The 490R neck pickup offers warm, rounded cleans and singing sustain, while the 498T bridge pickup delivers aggressive midrange punch and high-output bite.
