Players searching for the elegance and authority of a late-'60s Les Paul Custom rarely have the opportunity to experience an original without the compromises that can accompany a decades-old instrument. The Gibson Custom Shop Limited Edition 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue Murphy Lab brings that pivotal chapter of Gibson history into the present, recreating the look, construction, feel, and muscular voice associated with the Les Paul Custom's return in 1968. Part of Gibson Custom's Limited Edition Collection, this model makes an especially striking statement with its Ebony top and contrasting Gold back, complemented by a Murphy Lab Light Aged nitrocellulose finish.
The story behind this model reaches back to 1968, when Gibson returned the Les Paul to production after several years away from the catalog. The revived Les Paul Custom retained the upscale visual identity that had always distinguished the model while reflecting the construction and tonal direction of its new era. This Custom Shop recreation draws on that late-'60s character with a solid mahogany body, carved maple top, no weight relief, multi-ply body binding, nickel hardware, and the ornate appointments that make a Les Paul Custom instantly recognizable. Murphy Lab Light Aging adds the subtle appearance of a carefully preserved vintage instrument rather than disguising the guitar's refined Custom aesthetic beneath extreme wear.
A solid mahogany neck with an Authentic 1968 profile and long neck tenon continues the period-focused construction. The ebony fingerboard carries 22 reissue medium-jumbo frets and mother-of-pearl block inlays across its 12" radius, while a 24.75" scale retains the familiar Gibson feel for expressive bends, vibrato, and substantial rhythm work. A nylon nut and Kluson Waffleback tuning machines further reinforce the late-'60s inspiration.
At the heart of the guitar is a matched pair of 1968 T-Top Reissue humbuckers, voiced to capture the clear, articulate personality associated with Gibson's late-'60s humbucking pickups. They combine a defined low end and crisp upper register with enough midrange presence to drive an amplifier confidently, making the guitar capable of moving from articulate cleans and open rhythm work to aggressive classic-rock crunch and sustained lead tones. A hand-wired harness with two 500K CTS volume pots, two 500K CTS tone pots, and Black Beauty capacitors keeps the traditional Les Paul control layout intact while providing plenty of room to shape each pickup independently.
An ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and Stop Bar tailpiece anchor the strings, while nickel pickup covers, black Witch Hat knobs, black plastics, and the mother-of-pearl Gibson logo and Custom split-diamond headstock appointments complete the unmistakable Les Paul Custom presentation. More than simply a modern guitar dressed in vintage styling, this Limited Edition 1968 Reissue is built around the construction details and tonal character that defined an important transitional period in Gibson history. For the player or collector drawn to late-'60s Gibson craftsmanship, it offers the presence of a vintage-inspired Custom with the precision and consistency of a modern Gibson Custom Shop build. Available at Haggerty's Music, it includes its Custom Shop hardshell case, Certificate of Authenticity booklet, and Historic Reissue hang tags.
