The Gibson Custom Shop Limited Edition 1957 Les Paul Standard Reissue Murphy Lab approaches that dream from another direction, combining historically inspired construction with an extraordinary Refin Burst finish and the most intensive aging treatment offered by the Murphy Lab. Part of Gibson Custom's Limited Edition Collection, this 2026 model is built to capture the character of a Golden Age Les Paul that has spent decades making music rather than sitting untouched in its case.

The Murphy Lab Ultra Heavy Aged treatment is central to this guitar's story. Its nitrocellulose lacquer is painstakingly aged to create extensive checking, softened surfaces, worn edges, and the tactile character associated with a vintage instrument that has seen years of serious use. The Refin Burst adds another layer to that narrative, giving this limited-edition model a distinctive identity rather than simply reproducing the appearance of a conventional '57 reissue. Beneath the aging is the classic Les Paul foundation: a solid mahogany body with no weight relief and a carved maple top, a pairing responsible for the combination of warmth, sustain, clarity, and authority that made the original instruments legendary.

A mahogany neck with Gibson's substantial 1950s Chunky D profile continues the period-inspired experience. A long neck tenon joins it to the body, while the rosewood fingerboard features a 12" radius, 22 narrow-tall frets, trapezoid inlays, and a period-correct nylon nut. Combined with the familiar 24.75" scale, these specifications create a playing platform made for authoritative rhythm work, expressive bends, wide vibrato, and the kind of touch-sensitive phrasing that has defined generations of Les Paul players.

The voice comes from a pair of uncovered Custombucker Alnico 3 humbuckers with Double Classic White bobbins. Inspired by the character of early Patent Applied For-era pickups, the Custombuckers emphasize dynamic response rather than overwhelming output, producing an airy upper register, expressive midrange, and enough low-end definition to keep chords articulate as an amplifier begins to break up. The familiar two-volume, two-tone control layout and three-way toggle allow the pickups to move from warm neck tones and nuanced cleans to biting bridge sounds and thick, harmonically rich overdrive. The uncovered white bobbins also give this particular guitar a raw visual attitude that complements the heavily aged Refin Burst finish.

An ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and Stop Bar tailpiece complete the traditional Les Paul hardware platform, joined by Kluson Deluxe tuners, gold Top Hat knobs, and aged nickel hardware. The result is more than a pristine reissue with artificial wear added afterward; the construction, electronics, neck feel, finish, and hardware all work together to create the impression of an individual instrument with a history already written into its surfaces.
