For the player who wants the character, response, and unmistakable presence of a Golden Age Gibson without spending years searching for a vintage original, the Gibson Custom Shop 1958 ES-335 Murphy Lab Heavy Aged brings that experience into a meticulously crafted modern instrument. Available now at Haggerty's Music, this limited-edition 2026 ES-335 is finished in a striking Watermelon color and treated to the Murphy Lab's Heavy Aged process, recreating the lacquer checking, hardware patina, handling wear, and broken-in feel associated with a heavily played vintage guitar.
When Gibson introduced the ES-335 in 1958, its combination of hollowbody character and solidbody practicality created an entirely new category of electric guitar. The maple/poplar/maple laminate body and solid maple centerblock produced warmth, resonance, sustain, and feedback resistance in a design that would become a cornerstone of blues, jazz, rock, soul, and countless styles that followed. This Custom Shop recreation draws on that pioneering formula, combining historically inspired construction with a Heavy Aged nitrocellulose lacquer finish that gives the Watermelon color the depth and personality of a guitar that has already lived a long musical life. Rather than simply looking well-worn, the Murphy Lab treatment is intended to make the instrument feel familiar and comfortably broken-in from the first chord.
The mahogany neck features Gibson's substantial Authentic 1959 profile and a long neck tenon for a strong, resonant connection between neck and body. A rosewood fingerboard with a 12" radius, traditional dot inlays, 22 Reissue Medium Jumbo frets, and a 24.75" scale provides the familiar playing geometry that has helped make vintage ES models so enduring. Period-inspired details continue throughout the instrument. Built by Gibson Custom in Nashville, Tennessee, it includes a Lifton reissue hardshell case, Certificate of Authenticity booklet, and Historic Reissue hang tags.
A matched pair of Custombucker Alnico 3 humbuckers completes the late-'50s-inspired formula, delivering an articulate and dynamic voice with rich mids, clear highs, and the harmonic complexity associated with sought-after early humbucker-equipped Gibsons. Independent volume and tone controls for each pickup and a three-way toggle keep the electronics traditional and intuitive, allowing the guitar to move from warm neck-pickup jazz and blues textures to woody middle-position cleans and aggressive bridge-pickup rock tones. Combining Gibson Custom craftsmanship, Murphy Lab aging, historically inspired construction, and a distinctive Watermelon finish, this limited-edition 1958 ES-335 is built for the musician who wants a serious playing instrument with the personality and atmosphere of a well-traveled vintage guitar.
