Often referred to as the “Black Beauty,” the original 1957 Les Paul Custom stood apart with its striking ebony finish, gold hardware, and refined appointments that elevated it to the top of Gibson’s lineup. This Historic Collection reissue faithfully recreates that legendary instrument, delivering the look, feel, and tone that made the model a cornerstone of electric guitar history.

Unlike standard Les Paul models, the ’57 Custom features a body carved from a single solid piece of mahogany, producing a rich midrange voice with exceptional warmth and sustain. Paired with an ebony fingerboard, the guitar gains added snap and articulation that balances its powerful core tone. Gibson Custombucker Alnico III pickups recreate the smooth, open character of late-1950s PAF humbuckers, offering clarity, depth, and dynamic response that shines in both clean and overdriven settings.

Built with meticulous Historic Collection accuracy, the guitar features a long-tenon neck joint with hide glue construction, a no-wire ABR-1 bridge, and lightweight aluminum stop bar tailpiece for authentic resonance and sustain. The VOS nitrocellulose finish gives the instrument a gently aged patina, while classic details like mother-of-pearl block inlays, waffleback tuners, and multi-ply binding complete the unmistakable Black Beauty aesthetic.
