The Gibson Custom 1955 J-45 Reissue Vintage Sunburst pays homage to one of the most iconic acoustics in Gibson’s long history—the beloved “Workhorse.” First introduced in 1942, the J-45 quickly became a staple among songwriters and performers for its warm tone and unpretentious design. The 1955 version marked an important evolution with the addition of a 20th fret and a larger 50s-style pickguard, details that this Custom Shop recreation faithfully brings back to life. Built in Bozeman, Montana, it captures the tone, feel, and look of the original mid-century model that helped define the sound of countless recordings.

Constructed with a solid mahogany back and sides and a thermally aged Sitka spruce top, the 1955 J-45 Reissue produces a resonant, well-balanced voice rich in warmth and depth. The X-bracing is attached with hide glue for true vintage response, while multi-ply top and single-ply back binding complete the authentic appearance. The mahogany neck is shaped in a comfortable Round profile and joined to the body with a compound dovetail joint, also secured with hide glue for maximum tonal transfer and sustain.

The rosewood fretboard features mother-of-pearl dot inlays and 20 standard frets, providing a smooth and inviting playing experience. Period-correct details such as the vintage-style Grover strap tuners with cream buttons, bone nut and saddle, and classic teardrop-inspired pickguard evoke the craftsmanship of Gibson’s golden era. The Murphy Lab Light Aging treatment gives the instrument a gently worn patina and aged hardware, offering the feel of a well-loved vintage guitar that’s been preserved over decades.

Complete with a 1950s-style Lifton hardshell case, the 1955 J-45 Reissue isn’t just a tribute—it’s a fully realized recreation designed for serious players and collectors alike.
