Built for the player who wants the authority and depth of a true pre-war-inspired acoustic without chasing an elusive vintage original, the Gibson Custom Shop 1936 Advanced Jumbo revives one of the most intriguing chapters in Gibson history. Introduced during the mid-1930s as part of Gibson’s push toward a new generation of “advanced” instruments, the Advanced Jumbo was produced in relatively small numbers from 1936 through 1939 and never achieved the visibility of some later Gibson flat-tops. What it did earn, however, was a reputation among players and collectors for exceptional projection, balance, and power. Available now at Haggerty's Music, this 2026 Custom Shop recreation brings that rare design back with the kind of materials and construction choices intended to capture its original spirit.
The voice of the Advanced Jumbo sits in a compelling space between warmth and authority. Its thermally aged red spruce top is designed to respond with the openness and quickness associated with an older instrument, while rosewood back and sides add depth, overtone complexity, and a strong low-end foundation. Traditional hand-scalloped Advanced X-bracing, red spruce braces, and hide-glue construction help give the guitar a lively, immediate response with impressive headroom. The result is a round-shoulder dreadnought that can handle a heavy flatpick without collapsing, yet still responds beautifully to lighter touch and fingerstyle work.
That tonal balance makes the 1936 Advanced Jumbo especially well suited to bluegrass, country, Americana, folk, roots music, and singer-songwriter applications where a guitar needs to sound full without getting muddy. Expect a strong fundamental, broad dynamic range, articulate mids, and a clear top end that helps individual notes stay defined inside big chords. The substantial Historic AJ neck profile reinforces the vintage feel, while the 25.5" scale adds tension and projection that suit strong rhythm playing and confident lead work. Finished in Vintage Sunburst with VOS treatment and paired with premium Waverly open-gear tuners, this Custom Shop model is less a museum piece than a modern performance instrument built around one of Gibson’s most respected pre-war acoustic designs.
