The Collings CJ Rosewood represents a masterful reimagining of the classic slope-shoulder dreadnought. Inspired by the golden-era jumbos of the 1930s and 1940s, the CJ (short for “Collings Jumbo”) maintains the body dimensions and vintage styling players love, but delivers a more refined, responsive, and dynamically balanced voice — hallmarks of Collings craftsmanship. It features a premium solid Sitka spruce top and East Indian rosewood back and sides, a tonewood pairing celebrated for its powerful low end, articulate mids, and shimmering high end. The result is a guitar that combines warmth and richness with clarity and focus, making it equally suited to delicate fingerpicking or heavy flatpicking.
Founded by the late Bill Collings in Austin, Texas, Collings Guitars has earned a reputation for obsessive attention to detail and old-world craftsmanship, building some of the most consistently exceptional acoustic instruments available today. Every Collings is hand-voiced and meticulously built, often with tolerances finer than those used in aerospace manufacturing. The CJ, while echoing the aesthetics of the classic Southern jumbos from Gibson’s golden era, is not a simple reproduction. Instead, it’s Collings’ own take on the design — sleeker, more responsive, and capable of a wider tonal palette. From the hand-scalloped Sitka bracing to the luxurious ivoroid binding and compound-radius ebony fingerboard, every detail of this instrument is built for beauty, tone, and longevity.
This CJ is ideal for Americana, folk, blues, country, bluegrass, and singer-songwriter styles. Thanks to its slightly more contained low end, the CJ also records exceptionally well, avoiding the boominess that can muddy up studio tracks. The medium-depth neck with a comfortable C-shape profile feels fast and natural in the hand, and the 25.5" scale offers excellent projection and clarity, especially when tuned down. Whether you’re performing solo, accompanying vocals, or driving a full acoustic band, this Collings CJ offers the tone, feel, and visual presence of a truly heirloom-grade guitar. This used model comes with a sturdy hardshell case and has been upgraded with passive electronics; available now at Haggerty’s Music.
