Science defines a joule as a unit of energy, which is precisely what you can expect when playing your viola with a Joule carbon fiber bow. We named the viola bow after the 19th-century English physicist whose work set the foundation for today’s understanding of energy. We created this viola bow to offer more power and energy than other traditional viola bows with the same weight.

What Makes the Joule Such a Powerful Carbon Fiber Viola Bow?

When viola bows have more weight, they firmly grip the strings, creating a richer, more voluminous tone. The CodaBow Joule has more weight than the standard viola bow; however, the bow’s weight isn’t the only attribute that contributes to its power across extended ranges.

Revolutionary Shaft Design

Where traditional materials fall short, the Joule's innovative shaft design adds more mass to critical performance areas while preserving a balanced weight and comfortable flexibility. This unique design allows the viola bow to engage the string, allowing for effortless expression, whether you're playing percussive, rhythmic chops or rich, sustained notes.

Within the shaft resides a composite acoustic core made of durable carbon fiber. This structural element grants the bow remarkable power that defies its quickness and adaptability.

Perfected Frog and Hair Length

The CodaBow Joule boasts a compelling resonance in the lower strings and a bold projection that carries through every range. The shorter frog and longer hair allow for exploration in more aggressive and demanding styles and set-ups. The Turbo Xebony® Frog redistributes weight under the hand to create more space for bowing techniques at the frog.

Layered Diamond Weave

The Joule features multiple layers of our innovative Diamond Weave Technology, granting it durability without sacrificing flexibility. This enhancement allows you to command the string and retain the nuance of expression.

Reviews for the Joule speak for themselves! A highly experienced Portuguese violinist who has played for more than 50 years reported that the Joule gave his playing "new expression and performance capabilities" compared to the difference in balance from a classical bow.

Ready to Jam

Musicians of electric instruments and 5-6 string instruments appreciate the CodaBow Joule's capabilities and delivery. Its features align for best-in-class bluegrass, old-time, and fast jam performances. Joule reviewers describe being able to pull a "great tone" from their acoustic fiddles. Others celebrate finally being able to hit a specific tone. One CodaBow violinist shares, "The violin Joule has just the right weight for the upper and lower strings on my 5-string, and I don't have to work as hard to get the C-string tone I've been looking for." You can expect the same when performing with your viola!

A Lifetime of Worry-Free Play
