Created to honor longtime Martin executive Chris Martin IV’s 70th birthday, the limited-edition D-18 1955 CFM IV 70th takes inspiration from an original 1955 D-18 once owned by the Skip Maggiora collection. That historic instrument, worn from decades of play, became the blueprint for this reimagined classic — paying tribute not only to Martin’s legacy but also to the folk boom of the 1950s that shaped American music.
This model features a gloss Dreadnought body with mahogany back and sides, offering a warm, projective voice with strong midrange focus. For the first time in company history, the top is crafted from reclaimed spruce sourced from old-growth trees salvaged from Alaska — materials that carry a rich history from wind-felled logs to dismantled cabins and bridges. The aged finish is printed to replicate the vintage wear of the original guitar, adding authentic character. Rear-shifted non-scalloped Sitka spruce X-bracing delivers a clear, articulate response with enhanced treble presence.
The satin select hardwood neck, shaped in a Golden Era Modified Low Oval profile, pairs with an FSC-certified rosewood fingerboard adorned with period-correct 1955 Style 18 dot inlays. Vintage-style Kluson Waffleback nickel tuners complete the look, blending heritage style with dependable tuning stability. Limited to just 70 guitars worldwide, each includes an embossed paper label hand-signed by Chris Martin IV and a hardshell case. This instrument stands as both a collector’s piece and a remarkable player’s guitar, and it’s available right now at Haggerty’s Music.
