The Casio CZ-101 is a compact and affordable digital synthesizer that helped define Casio’s unique Phase Distortion (PD) synthesis in the mid-1980s. Though small in size, it offers a surprising amount of power with an 8-note polyphony, 4-part multitimbrality, and a 49-note mini keyboard. The CZ-101’s PD engine manipulates eight basic waveforms, creating a wide palette of tones that range from analog-style leads and pads to percussive and experimental textures, rivaling the Yamaha DX series at a fraction of the cost. Three independent 8-stage envelope generators (for pitch, filter-like DCW, and amplifier) provide extensive sound-shaping possibilities, while vibrato, portamento, ring modulation, and built-in noise expand its versatility. With 16 presets, 16 user patches, and MIDI support, this little synth offers both immediacy and flexibility despite its entry-level price tag.
