Few acoustic guitars carry the weight of history and sonic authority quite like the Martin HD-28. Born from the legacy of the pre-war D-28 — the instrument that shaped bluegrass, folk, and American roots music — the "H" in HD stands for "herringbone," a direct nod to the ornate wood purfling that adorned those golden-era models of the 1930s and ‘40s. Introduced in 1976, the HD-28 was Martin's way of resurrecting that legendary design, offering scalloped braces, forward-shifted X-bracing, and visual appointments that connected the past to the present. The result was — and still is — a bold, booming dreadnought that doesn’t just sound great in a room, it owns the room.
This 1996 HD-28, with a post-factory Fishman Matrix Infinity pickup, combines that storied vintage-inspired build with modern plug-and-play flexibility. A solid Sitka spruce top and East Indian rosewood back and sides create the rich, balanced dreadnought sound players have turned to for decades — powerful low-end, sparkling trebles, and strong note separation. The scalloped forward-shifted braces enhance volume and responsiveness, making this an ideal guitar for bluegrass flatpicking, solo acoustic singer-songwriter sets, or rhythm work in a full band. Whether on stage or in the studio, the HD-28E remains a timeless, workhorse dreadnought with one foot firmly planted in tradition and the other ready for the road ahead. Available now at Haggerty’s Music, this used model comes with a molded hardshell case for convenient transport and premium protection.
